Guardsman Vent Sanitizing Nationwide

Guardsman Vent Sanitizing: The Chicago Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Guardsman-compatible vent sanitizing systems for Chicago homeowners, with most jobs running between $280 and $520 installed depending on your duct configuration and whether we need to access hard-to-reach runs. Same-day service is available throughout the city when you call before noon. Most owners realize something’s wrong when they notice a musty smell returning within days of a standard cleaning, or when someone in the home with allergies starts struggling again despite the filters being new.

Which Guardsman Models This Applies To

Guardsman vent sanitizing equipment breaks down into two main series: the residential UV-C units (GS-UV series, commonly the GS-UV16 and GS-UV24) and the paired sanitizer-plus-fan assemblies used in their older integrated systems from the early 2000s. The GS-UV16 mounts in a standard 16-inch duct width and runs a 15-watt lamp; the GS-UV24 steps up to 25 watts for larger trunk lines you’ll find in Chicago bungalows and two-flats with finished basements. Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Guardsman changed their lamp socket configuration in 2014, so a pre-2014 GS-UV16 lamp will not seat in a post-2014 housing even though the wattage and length match. Check the yellow label on the transformer box - if it reads “Rev. D” or later, you need the updated four-pin lamp.

We carry both OEM Guardsman lamps and quality aftermarket equivalents from Abatement Technologies that meet the same 253.7 nanometer UV-C output spec. For most Chicago homes, the aftermarket unit performs identically and carries the same 9,000-hour rated lifespan, which translates to roughly 12 to 14 months of runtime given our heating season. OEM makes sense if your unit is still under Guardsman’s original 5-year housing warranty; otherwise, the aftermarket route saves you about $40 on the part without sacrificing output.

Bellows Air Duct & Vent Co. of Chicago is an independent service provider - we are not affiliated with Guardsman - though we have worked on enough of their systems to know the part numbers by heart.

Signs Your Guardsman Vent Sanitizing Is Failing

  • The lamp glows dim or flickers. UV-C lamps degrade slowly; by hour 8,000 the mercury vapor pressure drops and output falls below the 40 microwatts per square centimeter needed to actually kill mold spores. In Chicago’s humid summer months, this threshold matters more because condensation in ductwork accelerates microbial growth.
  • You smell mildew when the blower first kicks on. This means the sanitizer hasn’t been producing effective UV-C for weeks. The blower pushes air past a biofilm that’s been growing unchecked on the downstream side of your coil or duct lining.
  • The indicator light on the housing is out, but the lamp looks fine. Guardsman units use a simple ballast transformer that fails more often than the lamp itself, especially in homes near the lakefront where voltage fluctuates during summer storms. A dead ballast sends no current even to a brand-new lamp.
  • Your energy bill climbed without explanation. A failing sanitizer fan assembly (on the integrated models) draws more amperage as the bearing wears, sometimes doubling its rated 0.8 amps before it seizes entirely. We see this in Portage Park and Norwood Park homes with original 2005-era units still running.
  • The lamp housing shows brown heat discoloration. This is a cracked quartz sleeve or compromised seal, letting moisture reach the electrical contacts. In Chicago, freeze-thaw cycles in unconditioned attic ductwork stress these seals harder than in milder climates.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
GS-UV16 lamp swap (aftermarket) $280 - $350
GS-UV24 lamp swap (aftermarket) $320 - $400
Ballast / transformer replacement $180 - $260 (add to lamp if both failed)
Integrated fan-sanitizer assembly $420 - $520
Hard-access duct modification (crawl space, etc.) $75 - $150 additional

What drives the range: duct access difficulty, whether we need to cut and patch sheetmetal for integrated units, and whether your system needs both lamp and ballast. Every quote is itemized before we start - the number on the phone is the number on the invoice. The work carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, and the aftermarket lamps we install include a 1-year part warranty. We also stock Lennox, Trane, and Carrier sanitizing components if your system is mixed-brand.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: whether the lamp indicator light is on, whether the lamp shows visible darkening at either end (sign of age), and whether the housing is cracked or discolored. Turn the power off at the breaker first - these units run 120 volts through wet locations, and Chicago’s older knob-and-tube homes sometimes have unpredictable grounding.

Where DIY goes wrong: UV-C quartz sleeves shatter if overtightened or handled with bare fingers (skin oils create hot spots). The ballast wiring must match lamp wattage exactly - a 25-watt ballast on a 15-watt lamp overheats; a 15-watt ballast underdrives a 25-watt lamp and fools you into thinking it’s working when it’s not. And without a UV meter, you cannot verify actual output. We have been doing this long enough to know what clean looks like - and we do not leave until it gets there. If you’re unsure which revision you have, call (877) 502-3903 and we’ll walk you through reading the label.
